Rt. 42 and 55 access, the most shopping and restaurants of the three, and the widest range of housing - newer builds, older neighborhoods with real lots, townhomes if you’re done with a yard. 📍 Mullica Hill Quieter, more space, historic Main Street, that established community feel. The “settle in and stay awhile” option, and you’re still close to everything. 📍 Collingswood Walkable in a way most of South Jersey is not. The farmers market is a full social event, the main drag is the reason people move there, and PATCO puts you in Philly without a car. And these are only the beginning. Duffield’s Farm in Sewell for apple picking and cider donuts. Closed Sundays, so plan around it. 2. Kings Highway in Haddonfield for a Saturday of shops, a cold drink, and a picture with Haddy the Dinosaur. 3. Scotland Run Park in Clayton for the sunset walk I send everyone to. 4. Downtown Pitman for patio dinner and a bookstore where they remember what you’re reading. 5. Historic Smithville Park in Mount Holly for the floating boardwalks. It never feels crowded. And this Saturday specifically: the Washington Township Harvest Festival at the Olde Stone House Historic Village on Egg Harbor Road, 10 to 2, free. Pick and paint a pumpkin, watch the blacksmithing. At this point I think living in South Jersey means it’s required to have a very specific 1AM Wawa order committed to memory. 😅 I never really realized how weird some of our “normal” habits were until I had to explain them to somebody from out of state. Things like planning your whole evening around whether you’ll hit 42 and 55 at the wrong time. Saying “Go Birds” to a stranger in a parking lot and considering that a complete conversation. Calling it the Shore, never the beach. Holding firm that it’s pork roll and being genuinely bothered by anyone who says otherwise. And honestly, those little things are half the reason I love living here. If you’re in your “I’m done driving 40 minutes for everything” era, Washington Township is the first place I’d want you to see. 📍 It fits because you’ve got Rt. 42 and 55 right there, Philly is about 25 minutes and the shore is about 45. Errands, dinner, the gym, the pediatrician - all of it is close, and none of it turns into a whole afternoon. You’ve also got real shopping and restaurant density instead of one strip and a prayer, plus more newer construction than most of the towns around it. And the housing gives you actual choices. Newer builds with less to fix, older neighborhoods with bigger lots, townhomes if you’re done with a yard entirely. So you’re not just picking a town you like. You’re picking one that matches the season of life you’re actually in. Now if you’re in your “settle in and stay awhile” era, that’s a different answer, and it’s probably Mullica Hill.
